A Life of Music

Performing on stage and sharing a gift

Opera

Karen has performed extensively in the United States and abroad. Her personal favorite was singing the premier performance of Keith Gates’ 2nd Symphony, of which the final movement is vocal with the text taken from Angels in America.

Oratorio

Karen is regularly invited to sing with choruses and symphonies. She has also served as cantor at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Baton Rouge, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Memphis.

Private Lessons & Coaching

Performing, whether voice, piano, guitar, or another instrument, improves poise and confidence in any age student. If you’re looking for karaoke, though, Karen is not your teacher. She teaches proper technique from the very beginning and builds from there.

Teaching Preschool Music

A positive early childhood music experience can provide the foundation for a lifetime of love for music. It is rare that she is at the store when a former student or parent of a former student doesn’t stop her and tell her what an impact she had.

“It’s important … it’s most important … that children understand what they’re singing about and to sing with proper technique. Even when they’re very young and just starting out. Sometimes adults underestimate their capacity to do that.”

Meet the Artist

Karen Schowalter Cooper is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, where she grew up singing. She attended Louisiana State University on full scholarship, earning Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance. She performed numerous operatic roles during her years at LSU and she continued to perform her first professional roles with the company. She appeared as alto soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baton Rouge Symphony, Lake Charles Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Austin Symphony, and the Saarlandisches Rundfunk Orchestra.

Karen was a National Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Since moving to Memphis, Karen has performed several roles with Opera Memphis and as a soloist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Rhodes MasterSingers Chorale. She currently serves as a soloist and alto section leader at Germantown Presbyterian Church.

Meet the Teacher

Karen has been teaching private voice for over 30 years. Her students perform in school and community theater productions, local and regional honor choirs, and have been accepted into prestigious college music programs. As audition season approaches, it is common for former and current students to call to arrange a few sessions to polish up their audition pieces.

Karen has always had a natural gift for guiding young children in their musical development. She has taught preschool music for nearly 30 years, and currently teaches at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and Germantown Presbyterian Church. She holds both Orff and Kindermusik certifications. Karen has also used this gift in the community, working with special needs children and those diagnosed with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
